(ON)STOFFELIJK

"(ON)stoffelijk." emerged during a period of personal transition marked by the loss of someone important to me. Rather than retreating inward, this experience motivated me to travel and forge deeper connections with others. The project marked a shift in my artistic approach - from focusing on personal, introspective themes to engaging more broadly with the outside world and its constant state of flux.

"(ON)stoffelijk" explores the cyclical nature of existence and the fluid boundary between physical and spiritual presence. The work contemplates how we exist in a perpetual state of change, moving through cycles of falling, rising, growing, and letting go. It draws parallels between human life spans and the briefer existence of flowers, both part of an infinite cycle of natural processes. The project examines how flowers mark significant moments throughout our lives - from birth to death and everything in between - while considering the strange border between life and death, presence and absence.

Through this work, I explore how the spirit persists even as the physical form changes or disappears, and how growth continues in the spaces around loss. The project reflects on the emotional weight of beginnings and endings while seeking nuance in the blurring of boundaries and prejudices.

"(ON)stoffelijk" represents both literally and metaphorically my artistic evolution toward more open, outward-facing work, serving as a bridge between my earlier, more personal works and my current practice that embraces broader perspectives and deeper engagement with the world around me.

We live in a constant state of flux. We never stand still and are always changing. Somewhere in an infinite and unanswerable cycle full of coincidences.

We constantly repeat. We fall, rise, grow, and let go.

Flowers are passed on at birth, at death, and at different moments throughout a lifetime. The lifespan of humans relative to the infinite galaxy is short, but it is long compared to flowers. Looking at the lifespan of humans the same way one looks at the lifespan of a flower: A natural process, and in the absence of emotion.

Viewing the beginning and end of one’s life involves plenty of emotion. The process of living includes the search for nuance and the blurring of boundaries and prejudices.

We continually repeat. We fall, rise, grow and let go.

The border between life and death is strange. The ascension, fall, and disappearance of the human body. The spirit lives on and everything around it continues to grow.

It is there, it was there, but at the same time, it is not. The physical and mental experience of growth is experienced and abandoned.

Somewhere in an infinite and unanswerable cycle full of coincidence.
